Happy Labor Day!

Take The Day Off image

Happy Labor Day! I’m taking the day off blogging to spend the extra time with the family….outside! I’m not sure what we’re going to do yet, but I’m thinking a picnic at the park sounds perfect!

Do you have Labor Day plans? What are you doing? Enjoy your day!

Healthy Snacks for Kids

Good morning! I hope you are all having a great start to your week! I’m back today with the sequel to last week’s Healthy Lunches for Kids post. Today, I want to share healthy snacks.

Fruit Let’s start with the easiest snack. My kids are fruit eating machines. I actually have to hide the fruit in the fridge so they don’t eat all at once. I wash and cut all the fruit each Sunday, so it’s ready to eat when the kids are hungry or I need to pack Dylan’s lunch

Veggies Another very obvious option but worth mentioning. Just like the fruit, I was and cut these on Sunday so they’re ready to go. Sometimes, I give them a little dressing to go with their and other’s I let them eat plain. Another great option to go with their veggies….hummus. I haven’t had Dylan try any yet, but I’m determined to have him try it soon.

Popcorn And not the microwave kind. We have haven’t bought microwave popcorn in years. It’s not good for you and is full of chemicals. We buy the kernels and just pop them on the stove. It saves money and is a lot better for you. And the best part is you can add different spices or toppings and create your flavors each time constantly switching it up.

String cheese There’s not much to say about string cheese except yum. It’s a favorite snack for both of my kids and is perfect to grab on the go.

Mini cookies There are times when you just have to let kids be kids and they need to indulge like the rest of us. And their indulgences are usually in the form of cookies. Now I’m not saying you don’t have to make healthy versions of your favorite cookies because I totally do, but I do moderate how many my kids eat and they love when I make them. My trick, I just make them smaller, so my kids have a greater number of cookies but because they’re smaller, they don’t realize it’s the same as if they had a fewer number of the bigger cookies.

Yogurt Yogurt is one of those snacks that is in so many flavors there’s sure to be one that will satisfy your hunger. We always have yogurt in our house because if I don’t, Jordyn is not a happy toddler if that’s her snack choice of the moment. Dylan’s favorite yogurt is Chobani Champions and he loves topping it with granola.

Granola A favorite for topping granola at our house, granola also makes a tasty snack alone. While, we do buy granola, we also make our own. Julie, from Peanut Butter Fingers has an awesome peanut butter granola recipe that you have to try. It is SO good!

Roasted Chickpeas I love roasted chickpeas, and so does Dylan. You can add so many different spice combinations. You can go a sweet taste, salty taste, spicy taste or combo between more than one. In our house, we have found that this is a great snack when we’re craving chips.

Roasted Sugar Snap Peas I have not tried these nor have my kids, but I keep wanting to make them. I’m more of a salty snack person than a sweet snack person, so this is a snack that has been calling my name. Tossing some snack peas in a little olive oil and sprinkled with some salt then roasted; what’s not to love. Just like roasted chickpeas, it’s a cruncy snack you can have instead of chips.

Chips & Salsa
It’s no secret that kids love chips and when they have something to dip them in, it makes kids smile even more. We often have chips and salsa as a snack. We find some all natural chips that are lower in salt and will either find an all natural salsa or make our own for the kids to snack on. This is another snack that we portion and limit though since it can be easy to go overboard

Trail Mix Oh, the endless possibilities when it comes to trail mix. I could probably do a whole post on different trail mix recipes (hmmm….maybe that’s an idea). There are so many different items you can use to make your own trail mix, and your kids can help pick out what they want them in too. Dylan loves choosing some of the ingredients. Our favorites usually include a mix of salty and sweet.
That about wraps up some healthy snack ideas for kids. Kid snacks are my favorite thing to come up with, especially if I can get the kids to help me make them.

Savannah’s Hot, Hot, Hot

Like half the country, Savannah is HOT! Yesterday and the rest of the weekend, temps should be in the high 90’s and maybe hit 102, which I know isn’t as hot as other places, but with the heat index it’s supposed to feel as high as 114. That’s CRAZY! I do NOT like it! And tomorrow is supposed to be almost as hot. 🙁

But before I get too ahead of myself, I want to rewind back to Wednesday. Wednesday, I was able to meet the newest addition to a very close family of ours. Our friends, Maggie and Ryan, welcomed their 3rd child into the world on June 18th. Since we all wanted to go, we had to find a time that was good for us and our friends. Wednesday was the day. After work, we headed to Beaufort, to meet the beautiful Isla Esme! Isn’t she the cutest?

And on the way to Beaufort, I captured some pictures of Savannah! What a view!

And a few of Beaufort. These pictures make me really miss Beaufort and it’s gorgeous views!

Because of the heat that began yesterday, and I like to get my runs over with, my runs yesterday and today were both at 6:30am. According to the C25K program, yesterday’s run consisted of a 5 minute warm-up and 20 minutes of running. I’m to going to lie, I was nervous. It wasn’t something I thought I could do. And wouldn’t you know, I did it!!!! I was so pleased with myself. I began the run knowing I needed to pace myself otherwise I wouldn’t be able to do it.

My pace was slower than I wanted it to be, but the fact that I actually ran the whole 20 minutes was huge for me. My pace for just the running portion was 11:35. I hope that with more runs that my pace will change and by the time I run the Savannah Bridge Run, I will finish it in 30 minutes.

This morning, I went for my run as soon as TJ came home and you could feel the heat and humidity difference between yesterday morning and today. It wasn’t pleasant. For whatever reason, I struggled with today and didn’t do well at all. I wasn’t tired or hungry. I would like to blame the heat and humidity but I don’t think it was that. And then a little over halfway through the run, I got a huge stitch in my side that really started hurting. I took as my cue that maybe today wasn’t meant to be a running day. I headed home and did some stretching.

For now, I’m about to head out to Forsyth Park, hit up the Farmer’s Market and let the kiddos play outside before the unbearable heat kicks in.

Happy Memorial Day!

How’s your day going so far? Mine is great! I got my work out in this morning. It was a quick cardio followed by some upper body strength training. And I’m thinking an abs workout will be thrown in later. I have finished up the laundry and most of the cleaning, but I feel like I’m never really done with it. Gotta love kids. LOL!

Last night Beryl made landfall in Jacksonville and we saw some of our first bands of heavy rain.

We rained throughout the night but hasn’t really rained today. I guess it’s coming later, but who knows. Here I was thinking it was going to be non-stop for two days. haha!
This morning I started out my day with some oatmeal topped with some peanut butter and chia seeds. I was fabulous.
I followed breakfast with folding the last of the laundry and a trip to the gym when Jordyn took her morning nap. After the gym, it was off to Kroger to pick up bananas, coffee from Starbucks and to see what I wanted to do for dinner. I couldn’t decide what we would have so I didn’t end up getting anything for tonight, but I did stumble upon a few items that were marked down. 3 bags of Alexia peas for 99 cents each!!!! I was pretty excited. Peas are a favorite for Jordyn and we’re actually out of them right now so it was perfect. They also had 2 boxes of Amy’s Cheese Pizza Snacks for 99 cents each! We all love these (although I try not to eat them too much) and this is great for Dylan for a quick lunch or snack. I just those I saved about $12!!! GO ME!!! Too bad TJ isn’t awake for me to share my joy.
And speaking of TJ, even though he is no longer in the Marine Corp, I want to take a moment and thank him and every other soldier past, present, and future for the sacrifices they make so that we may enjoy the life and freedoms we have. I am so grateful and honored to be married to such a phenomenal man and that he was, and always will be part of the few, the proud.
Thank you babe! I love you! You are one in a million!

Just for fun. Me and TJ at the Marine Corp ball in 2009. Our last one.

Perfect Weather

I stepped out the door this morning to get back on the C25K train and it was gorgeous outside. It was a cool 63 degrees outside. If only TJ didn’t have to head to SCAD, and I didn’t have what feels like a million things to do, I think I could have stayed out there all day. But that is not the case. I have to dig through Jordyn’s newborn clothes for a few outfits to go up as decoration for a baby clothes line at a baby shower tomorrow. I also need to paint the clothes pins to match the theme. I have endless amounts of laundry and cleaning to do, need to do some Pinterest searching for some picture ideas for a photo session later, and then have to head downtown for the photo session. I’m hoping I’ll be able to scout out a few side streets or other locations for future ideas as well.

Whew! I’m tired just thinking about all this.

As for my run this morning, I’d like to think I did better, but I honestly have no clue. My C25K app decided to not log any times and my Map My Run app gave me some times that I wish were right but I don’t think are.

If you look at the second picture you can see I have an average pace of 9:39 and a max pace of 6 min/mile. I wish. I know I can’t run that fast. I think somewhere along my route, I must have lost a signal and when the app caught back up it messed with the times. I feel like I had a faster time today than the first week but it’s hard to tell. I know my distance is farther even though this says otherwise as well but how far, I’m not really sure. Hopefully I won’t have the same problem again tomorrow and I’ll have a better idea of how I did. For now, I just have to be satisfied with completing another day, which s=isnt easy when I want to know my times.

Has something like this happened to you? A failed app, heart rate monitor or even piece of gym equipment?

Where To Start?

Oh where to begin? An Intro isn’t really appropiate. I would just be repeating my About Me page, and that’s just silly.

Today is the day I start my health and fitness blog and continue my effort to lose the 40 pounds I really need to lose. A 40 pounds that I kind of wish I could say was baby weight but it isn’t. I was at my pre-pregnacy weight days after my daughter was born. I walked out of the hospital that Feb 2011 day in pre-pregnancy jeans. I was blessed.

But now (well should have been before now) I need to lose the weight I should have lost a long time ago. I’m making no excuses. I don’t have any. There’s no one to blame but myself and now is the time to do something about it.

We are leaving in about 45 min to meet with TJ’s sister and pick up our 6 year old. He was on Spring Break last week and went to visit TJ’s parents last week. I am ready to have him home. I sure do miss him when he’s gone.

Jordyn took her nap this morning and TJ begged me not to go to the gym before we left so he could sleep a little longer before we left. He works overnight on the weekends so he sleeps a lot during the day unless we have something to do.

I guess I’ll be heading to the gym when we get home and then need to decide on what to do for dinner tonight. I failed to think about this last night and take something out. HAHA! Such is life. LOL!!!
