Oh My Knee and Speed Work

This morning, I woke up ready to workout but not ready to go to the gym. I decided an at-home workout was in order.

Starting with my plank and bridge is how I like to start my mornings. Like always, the top one is my plank and the bottom is my bridge. Lately I have broken the 1 minute barrier and I’m refusing to go back.

This week started Phase 3 of Best Body Bootcamp, which includes Drop Sets with periods of active recovery nestled in between. Monday was my first attempt at Drop Sets and I have to say, there was no boredom. The time passed by quickly as I moved from one to another and one exercise to another. Tina really is a genius!
Yesterday was going to be a rest day for me but we ended up taking a family walk last night which. I love family walks but we don’t do them often because it can be so hot out. I’m hoping that we can pick them back again seeing as how the weather hasn’t been too unbearable the last two weeks and fall is coming. I’ll be pushing for a family walk everyday come fall. lol.
Anyways, back to today. I began today’s workout, like Monday. There was just one difference: my right knee was hurting. I have no idea where it came from or what I could have done to it. I pushed through and finished the workout but it wasn’t as good of a workout as I really wanted it to be. I made a few modifications so that I didn’t put too much pressure on my knee if I could help it but at least I finished. I had the intention on going for a short run this morning but thought it was best to hold off. Hopefully tomorrow I can get one in, even if it’s a walk/run combo.
Next week, I hope to begin training for my first 5K in December. I’m excited and a little anxious to get started. I know I will incorporate some speed work but speed work is new to me. Some of my runs will be outdoors and some will be on the treadmill but I have figured out just yet, how I’m going to measure my speedwork. The plans I have looked at all use the metric system for speed work, yet warm-ups and cool downs are in US measurements, so switching back and forth in my running apps would be a pain and I don’t know where the settings on the treadmill are to change that. I have looked up that 1600 meters is approximately 1 mile so I may just convert everything but truthfully that seems like a lot of work. Does anyone with experience have any tips on measuring speed work on both the treadmill and outdoors? I’d love to hear them.
How about your race day training? I’m using Runner’s World SmartCoach App to help figure out my training schedule. Do you use an app or do you come up with your own training plan? How did you come up with it if you make your own?

Mickey Mouse Clubhouse

It’s what’s currently on TV this morning and the first time Jordyn has ever watched anything on TV for any length of time, and by length of time, I mean more than a few minutes. She is not a TV watcher and while 99% of the time, I like, there’s that 1%of the time, I wished she’d watch a little TV just so I could get a few things done around the house without her “help.” LOL!

And of course 10 minutes after the show she starts she’s over it and trying to “help” me type this post, which is taking a lot longer to type than I had intended. Gotta love my daughter. lol.

Moving on, how is everyone’s weekend going? Mine is going well. My friend, Beth, came over yesterday to pick up some pictures and then it was off to take our cars to get washed. I had two Groupons that I bought back in May for my car and TJ’s car. I had forgotten about them until this past week and realized they were going to expire soon. Unfortunately, TJ’s car isn’t working right now (radiator problems :/ ) so we weren’t going to be able to use it for his car. I called Beth earlier in the week to see if she wanted a free car wash. So yesterday was the day.

We took it to Auto Shine Car Wash in Savannah and they were fantastic. My Groupon was for a basic full service wash. They vaccumed the washed and hand dryed the outside and then vaccuumed the inside, cleaned the dashboard, the cup holders and every other nook and crevice they could find. We felt bad we didn’t have more of a tip to give them. If we had known how good of a job they were going to do, we would have definitely made sure to have more cash.

While there, they noticed one of my tires was really low. He offered to put more air in the tire, and while he was filling my tire, he noticed was cautioning me about just how bad I needed new tires. I already knew I needed 2 new tires for my car (the back ones are fine) and we were planning on doing it next month when we had a little extra money. But the gentleman filling my tire pointed out where the current tires weren’t going to make it another month. I had to get new ones right away. These guys were so helpful, and Groupon or not, we will definitely be returning.

Thankfully Sam’s Club was just down the street turning a short trip for a car was into a full afternoon out. It took 2 1/2 hours before my car was done receiving its new tires and it was the first time I really got to roam around Sam’s Club. Normally when me and TJ go, we have the kids and Jordyn gets antsy so it’s in and out for us. They have some pretty cool stuff. I mean check out this UGA skirt that I’m totally buying for Jordyn next time I go.

By the time I finally made it home, TJ had fed the kids dinner and needed to get ready for work. Sadly, it left no time for a workout but I did get my plank and bridge in for the day.

Even though, I didn’t get a workout in yesterday, I was happy with my workouts for the week. Today officially marks the halfway point of Best Body Bootcamp. I can’t believe we’re half way done. Tomorrow starts Phase 3 and after looking over the workouts for the next two weeks, I am ready to get started. Full Body Drop Set Exercises with Intervals for Cardio, bring it on.

Celebrity Look-A-Likes

I really do love my morning workouts! I don’t think I can say it enough! This morning kicked off another round of Circuit Intervals and I have to be honest. I think I rocked it this morning.

Run and Core

This morning, this post is short sweet and to the point.

I woke up this morning wanting to go back to sleep, but knowing that I needed and wanted a good run this morning. And a good run is what I got.

I hopped on the treadmill this morning and got straight to my run. I was feeling really good through most of the run and determined to do at least 3 miles. I hit the 3 mile mark and pushed a little further. My pace was 10:42 and right now I’m happy with that. When I look back to where I started in February and March, it makes me proud. When I started, I couldn’t run more than 2 minutes without wanting to take a walk break. Now I can run 32 minutes (my first 5 was a brisk warm-up walk) and I know if I keep going I can do more. And it makes me excited for my race in December.

And with my run complete, it was on to my plank and bridge. My plank was OK but I rocked that bridge this morning!
Finally, all that was left was my Core workout for Best Body Bootcamp. Double crunches are fabulous! Oblique V-Ups, on the other hand, are not easy. I can’t seem to figure them. Tips anyone? I could use any and all. haha!
With my workout done for the day, I feel great and ready to be productive.

And I’m Back In!

Happy Monday morning! How was your weekend? Mine was busy but fun!

Saturday was a bittersweet day. It was the day that my grandmother was layed to rest. My grandmother was a special person and she will never be forgotten. I handled not being there better than I thought but it was still rough. After the funeral, my mom called me with some more unfortunate bad news. Right before the funeral my sisters got very sick and had to be rushed to the ER. One of my sisters, Allyson, was worse than the other passing out before walking in to the funeral. At the time she called, no one knew what was wrong, but my mom knew she had to let me know. She didn’t want to ruin my day but she knew not telling me would have upset me more. It wasn’t until hours later that she was able to call me back and let me know that they both had a virus and that Allyson had also become dehydrated as a result of the virus. They are thankfully fine now and should be heading home back to Atlanta today. Needless to say, I’ve had my fair share of bad news for the day.
Saturday was also my son’s birthday. I am still blown away that my little boy is 7! Where has time gone? We started out Dylan’s birthday with a birthday breakfast surprise. He loves getting coffee-free drinks from Starbucks. We don’t let it happen often though. So, I thought it would be a nice treat for me and him to head out for some Starbucks. He had no idea where we were going until we pulled into the parking lot, but was excited when he realized he was getting his own drink.

Once we made it home, it was time to get ready for a Birthday BBQ. Dylan told us he didn’t really want a party and then last week decided he wanted one. It wasn’t something we could really do last minute but I called up some friends to see if they wanted to come over for BBQ and cupcakes for Dylan’s birthday. Nothing big but a little something to celebrate. 
I tried to make Oreo cupcakes with a gooey surprise of vanilla frosting in the center.
Sadly Batch #1 failed by having frosting ooze out of the cupcakes so Batch #2 was just chocolate cupcakes.  They were all frosted with vanilla frosting and then topped with crushed Oreos and everyone still liked them so I guess they were a success in the end. I don’t like cake, frosting or Oreos so I never had one.
We picked up some water balloons, and these really cool water blasters from the Dollar Tree for the kids to play with. I have no pictures of them playing with either since they were so close to the door, it meant being in the line of fire if I so much as opened the door. They loved every minute of it.
The good times ended with presents! Dylan was so excited about every gift, even the school shirts he recieved. He’s so happy to wear something other than white. LOL! (Side note: We moved in the middle of the school year last year and his new school required white or hunter green shirts. Hunter Green shirts can NOT be found in the middle of the school so he had to wear white everyday. Poor kid)
By the time everyone left, it was almost time for the kids to get ready for bed and TJ to head to work, so this mom got a little bit of time to relax before heading to bed herself.
Yesterday, our day was spent at home but not relaxing. House cleaning and laundry were on the agenda. 
Now, onto some fitness. I slacked last week in the fitness department. I got my workouts in but it was all light effort. And I didn’t even blog about any of it. I was busy with getting the house organized, sorting through stuff to get rid of and life in general. Being locked out of the gym didn’t help either.
My cardio is what really suffered. My strength workouts were great but with either rain or the awful heat and humidity, outside runs were not happening for me. 
This morning was a new week and new story. I headed to the gym hoping to be able to get in. Today was my lucky day! I am no longer locked out….finally!
Today’s workout started Week 4 of Best Body Bootcamp, which meant Workout A incorporated with cardio. These circuit intervals are great and compared to last week’s Circuit Intervals, this was so much better. I decided to push myself a bit today, thinking I should be able to keep a better pace since the time spent on each set would be shorter. Instead of running around 10:30-10:45, I pushed myself to run each 5 minute interval at 9:30. It was a success and I felt great. It’s something I definitely want to work towards as a normal pace but I know that will take to be able to maintain that for long periods. Either way I was proud and covered 2 miles in the 20 minutes I spent on the treadmill. My strength training session was fantastic and I was feeling it a lot more than last week. That 2/4/2 tempo is killer!
I finished out my workout with my usual plank and bridge. One of these days, I will remember to knock those out first so I can hold them longer. LOL!
Before leaving the gym, I hit the scale and have reached my first HUGE milestone! I was down 2 pounds from my last weigh-in bring my total loss to 20.6 pounds and pushing my over the halfway mark and bringing me to a weight I haven’t seen in a long time. Talk about a great way to start the week!

Major Fail

There’s a reason I work out in the morning. OK, there are a few reasons, I work out in the mornings:

  1. I am a morning person. While I may not want to get up right away at the sound of the alarm and occasionally hit the snooze, once I get out of bed, it only takes brushing my teeth to get moving and going.
  2. My day is almost always more productive when it’s started with cardio. Take this morning, for example, I worked out as soon as getting up, showered, had breakfast, checked my email, and have started this post all before 8 am (keep in mind, I won’t get to finish this post until after I get to work, but knowing I’ve already started will be a big help).
  3. I have more energy and feel better throughout the day. Coffee helps with the energy too but a good workout gives me a fabulous boost.
  4. Life almost always gets in the way when I get home from work so night workouts just get pushed to the side and eventually not done because I get tired and need to head to bed.
Reason #4 is exactly what happened yesterday. First let’s back up a little more to yesterday morning. I woke up and headed for the gym. Unfortunately when I got to the gym, I was locked out 🙁 The gym I go to is switching finance companies and they have made notes and let everyone know that during the switch there may be some people whose cards won’t work and they’ll get locked out. I was one of those people yesterday morning.

I headed home and decided just to wait til I got off work last night to work out and TJ said he’d work out with me.

None of that happened. When I got home, we needed to make a quick run to  the grocery store, make the kids dinner, get them bathed and ready for bed. We also had a Skype date with my niece who started kindergarten yesterday to find out how her first day of school went. That went a little longer than expected and by the time I got the kids into bed, TJ was passed out on the couch and I was ready for bed.

So, a work out was a no go, making yesterday an unintended rest day. I did, however, get my plank and bridge in for the day though.

With no work out yesterday, I’m starting Week 3 of Best Body Bootcamp a day behind. I don’t like it but it is what it is, so this morning was time to get moving. I opted not to go to the gym in case I was still locked out and decided on a workout at home. 
This week starts Phase Two and introduces Tempo Training into the strength workouts. Today was also the first time I had done what Tina calls Circuit Intervals. They are a mix of cardio and strength all in one workout. It was pretty fabulous! My only complaint was that I felt like my cardio lacked some. We don’t have a treadmill yet (hopefully in another few months we’ll have one) so my option for cardio was running in place. I guess I could have done imaginary jump rope. haha! Truthfully, I could have gone for a run outside around the cul-de-sac but it was 5am and I thought going in and out of the house with a not-so-quiet door was definitely asking for trouble. Having Jordyn wake up that early would have made for one grumpy little girl all day, resulting in a very grumpy husband when I got home. lol
Anyways, back to the topic at hand, Circuit Intervals. While running in place wasn’t really what I wanted to do, it is what worked for me this morning. In between each cardio portion were strength exercises, which included some plie squats and push ups. Tina must LOVE push ups! She’s always throwing some of those in. Maybe by the time Bootcamp is over, I’ll be able to do nothing but regular push ups. I can do a few regular push ups but most of mine are knee push ups. And as for these plie squats, I was feeling the crap out them towards the end, especially in my knees, which was making me wonder if I was doing them right the whole time.
Finally, I fit in my plank and squat for the day to round out my workout. My plank is another one of those weaker ones, where I should have done it before my workout. lol
Working out at home this morning gave me about 15 minutes of extra time this morning since I didn’t have to drive to or from the gym. It was glorious! It made a little more excited about getting a treadmill!

Phase 1 is Complete

Today marks the official end of Phase 1 of Best Body Bootcamp. I can’t believe it’s been two weeks already. I am loving every minute of it.

Monday was an Upper Body using Workout A followed by a 20 minute HIIT workout. With better form in my exercises and faster speeds in HIIT workout, I felt fantastic!

Tuesday was BIG day for me! I completed Workout B, which was a lower body workout including my best times for wall sits and my cardio portion was my last and final day of C25K! It was one of my first big fitness goals and I was so happy to reach that goal.

Wednesday brought on a 20 min walk at an 8.0 incline with some core work. I thought I would have been better this week with my core than last but it was the opposite. I don’t know if it was my lack of sleep or what.

Thursday, I learned that my walking planks from the first week weren’t the best in form and my butt was in the air. Ooops! Once realizing how I was doing it and what I was doing wrong, my walking planks were shorter in length but I knew they were in great form, so I was fine with it. I also opted for a lower key cardio session with 45 minutes on the bike.

Friday was taken as a rest day. I woke up to finding out my grandmother has passed away over night, so it was a very emotional day and I just wanted a day off.

Saturday I met up with Madeline and a friend of hers for a run at one of her favorite parks. They definitely pushed me and I needed it. I think I need that push more. I’m so glad we got together. Thanks ladies! I will get better. LOL!!!! I also knocked out my plank and bridge for the day once I got home. However, Jordyn thought it would be fun if she challenged me by trying to climb on me during my bridge, so I had some extra weight. And I think my form may have suffered slightly, but it was highly entertaining and Jordyn couldn’t stop giggling.

Today was another rest day. I got a good amount of cleaning and laundry done and then we headed to Bluffton. Dylan spent the night with a friend last night in Beaufort and we met halfway in Bluffton to pick him up and hang out with out friends. I did manage my plank and bridge for the day though. And they’re better than they have been. I’m getting stronger and loving it!

Bring On The Gymnastics!

I know you all are wondering where my post is from yesterday. I promised I worked out and didn’t take a rest day but the post just didn’t happen. Work was surprisingly keeping my on my toes and I was exhausted from staying up and watching the Olympics Tuesday night. I don’t typically stay up til 11:45. I’m in bed by 10pm at the latest. And tonight will be another late night since the Womens Individual All-Around In Gymnastics is tonight. It’s definitely my favorite sport in the Olympics!

Anywho, let’s take a trip back in time to yesterday morning at the gym. It was definitely not one of my better workouts. After a mere 5 1/2 hours of sleep doesn’t work for me anymore. I need at least 7. When 5am rolled I was exhausted. I hit the snooze button a few too many times so when I actually got up I was short on time.

I began my work out with 20 min of cardio. I opted for this cardio to be a walk but at an incline of 8.0

It was then onto some Core work. Due to time and exhaustion, I only managed to get in two rounds. I;m a little disappointed but there’s no point in dwelling on it. I did my best to work on better form for my V-Sits, which I think I achieved but gave me lower times. I’m ok with that since my form was better.
I struggled with my planks yesterday morning too. 
And last was time for my bridges. Those were pretty normal
I’m telling you, my whole day was off, not just my workout. I was off all over the place and coffee did not help either. Last night we had dinner and Facetime’d with my family before it was time for the kids to go to bed. Not long after they went to bed, I went to bed myself was asleep by 9:30.
Ahhhh, I woke up at 5am this morning refreshed. I started my workout with Workout C of Bootcamp. This week I had the opportunity to do my strength training in front of mirror and not be in anyone’s way. While working on my walking planks, I noticed in the mirror that as I walked, my butt would get higher. Uh oh! I worked hard on keeping my butt down so I had the best possible form. I definitely felt the struggle and it resulted in lower times. Honestly though, I’m happy with what did because I know my form was great!
When I finished with Workout C, it was on to my cardio session. I wasn’t really in the mood for a run, so I headed to the bike for 45 minutes.
I won’t bore with work, because trust me, it would bore you, but now I’m relaxing on the couch trying to patiently wait for the women’s gymnastics individual all-around
And yes, I know this is a picture of the whole team and tonight is the individuals but I was truly afraid to google either girl by name for a picture for fear of finding out the results tonight. LOL! So this will work for now.

How Could I Forget?

I have no idea what I was thinking yesterday but I completely forgot about my plank and bridge for the day. It wasn’t until I was at work that I realized I never did them, so after dinner it was time to get my plank and bridge on. I tried to convince TJ to do them with me, but he was’t up for it. Instead, he said, “No, I’ll just watch you do it.” With my audience watching, I was determined to better than my normal 30-35 second plank and my 1 minute and a half bridge. I succeeded!

The rest of the night was pretty chill but I did end baking up a tasty little treat compliments of Courtney from Sweet Tooth Sweet Life
Yummy! This Zucchini Oatmeal Bread was fabulous despite one minor problem. I slightly burnt it. Ooops! But I blame my oven. I set the timer but the timer never went off.
And while I waited on it to bake, I did a little 50 Shades Darker reading. I’m really enjoying these books. I just wish I had more time to read.
And that brings us to this morning. This morning I was out the door and at the gym not-too-bright (the sun wasn’t even up yet) and early. 
Lower Body Workout B and my last day of C25K were on the agenda. I started with my last day of C25K. I can’t believe I have finally reached the last day! I completed the run with a decent time for me and I was pleased! 
Next came the Lower Body workout with more wall sits and one leg sit-and-stands. I did better than last week on the wall sits but not the one leg sit and stands. I’m still awful at those. LOL!
Once I finished my lower body workout I sit had my plank and bridge. I remembered this morning. Not the best but the worst.
And before I left the gym, I decided to have a weigh in. Down another .6 pounds, bringing my total loss to 18 pounds. Slowly moving but moving. I’m happy!
By the time I got back home, I was starving. Breakfast was a Starbucks Turkey Bacon sandwich and an Iced Coffee. I was rushed when I came home so I had to leave without breakfast so it was a morning out.
Lunch today was a chicken salad topped with raspberry vinegarette dressing and a slice of zucchini bread topped with Laughing Cow Strawberry Cream Cheese.
Dinner was nothing big, just some scrambled eggs, which I forgot to photograph. Oops! But now I’m hungry and I have hard time believing the no food after 8 rule, so I’m going to have a bowl of cereal and watch the Olympics.

Good Monday morning! How is everyone this morning? I am exhausted, and I don’t really know why. I got plenty of sleep last night. I could back to sleep right now, but I don’t think work would like that very much.

I got up this morning and headed to the gym for Week 2 of Best Body Bootcamp. After resting up over the weekend, I was ready to kick Week 2 into high gear (once I got to the gym, getting out of bed was rough. lol)
Today’s workout was back to Upper Body. Last Monday, I used weights that I felt were a little too heavy, resulting in not-so-great form. Today, I lowered the weights so I could focus on better form and better form is what I got. I could tell my muscles were working harder even with the lower weights. By the time I reached the last super set, I thought my arms were going to fall off. haha. 
This morning a HIIT workout was also on the agenda. I opted for the treadmill today, starting with a minute warm-up at a speed of 4.0. Once I hit the HIIT portion, I went for 60 seconds at a speed of 6.6, folllowed by a recovery speed of 5.0 for 60 seconds. I repeated this to total 10 minutes and ended with a 5 minute cool down. 
That wrapped up this morning’s workout. Tomorrow is Lower Body and my final day of C25K, along with a July goals recap!
